Today's News: Annual Thanksgiving Service Celebrates Diverse Traditions

Author: Brock Letchworth   Source: The Daily Reflector (NC)

Title: ANNUAL THANKSGIVING SERVICE CELEBRATES DIVERSE TRADITIONS

Nearly 200 people piled into the chapel of St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Sunday for a celebration of diversity.

The eighth annual Community Interfaith Thanksgiving Service brought together more than 20 religious groups and organizations from the community for what organizers described as an opportunity to reflect on the reasons they have to be thankful.

The event was organized by the Interfaith Alliance of Eastern Carolina which promotes peace and justice through open communication and understanding of various faith traditions.
Debi Niswander, event organizer and leader of the alliance, said the turnout for Sunday's event was probably the largest in the event's history.

Today's News: ‘Spirit’ Moves Many At Expo

Author: Camille Fioti   Source: Wilkes- Barre Times Leader (PA)

Title: ‘SPIRIT’ MOVES MANY AT EXPO

An eclectic blend of national psychics, healers and artisans came together for a Spirit, Mind and Body Expo at the Ramada Inn over the weekend.

Everything from candles and incense to psychic readings with aura photos were offered at the event participants say was aimed at enhancing one’s physical and mental well-being.

Paula Cross of Angel Wings Holistic Harbor gave readings by interpreting the colors surrounding a person’s aura using special aura photography. The biofeedback method picks up a person’s spiritual energy, said Cross.

Nativity Scene Proposed In Clarksville Draws Ire

Author: Jake Lowary   Source: The Leaf-Chronicle

Title: NATIVITY SCENE PROPOSED IN CLARKSVILLE DRAWS IRE

The pastor at Grace Church of the Nazarene says he and his congregation will present their "Christmas on the Cumberland" Nativity scene despite objections from the American Civil Liberties Union.

Steve Estep, the church's pastor, said Saturday the church went through all the proper channels to present the display, and won't let the ACLU effort diminish their celebration of the season, and "what it's really all about."

The ACLU sent a letter to City Attorney Lance Baker on Nov. 11, alleging the city's riverfront Christmas observance violated the First Amendment in an "apparent promotion and endorsement of Christianity."

The letter, signed by ACLU Staff Attorney Tricia Herzfeld, claims the city showed Grace Church favoritism by allowing it to set up the display, which was "jointly sponsored" by the city and Grace Church.

Fort Hood Soldier Says Army, Islam Share Common Values

Author: Gretel C. Kovach   Source: The Dallas Morning News (TX)

Title: FORT HOOD SOLDIER SAYS ARMY, ISLAM SHARE COMMON VALUES

Sgt. Fahad Kamal awoke before dawn the morning after the attack. In his Army uniform, he stood before his prayer mat, the one his mother bought him in Houston. He smoothed the top right corner folded over against the evil eye, touched his forehead to the velvet rug the color of sand, and held his palms toward heaven.

Kamal, 26, a combat medic who served in Afghanistan before moving to Fort Hood, had a lot to pray about that day. Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, another soldier – and another Muslim and medical professional – was accused of shooting 13 people dead and injuring 29 more.

A U.S. citizen of Pakistani descent, Kamal feared those bullets could ricochet beyond the cordoned-off soldier processing center, wounding even more. So he prayed for the victims and for the Army, for his family in Sugar Land and other Muslims. He prayed that their faith would not be judged because of one crazed extremist.

Interview With Autumn Breeze, 5th Generation Witch

Author: Paul Roberts   Source: Sacramento Press (CA)

Title: INTERVIEW WITH AUTUMN BREEZE, 5TH GENERATION WITCH

Question: Tell us something personal about yourself, your family life and anything else you would like to tell us.

Answer: I was born a fifth generation witch and was always surrounded by people with spiritual gifts of many different kinds. I had many visions and dreams showing me what’s to come in the future. I could even see and feel ghosts. My mother was a great reader and was very well known in the community. I now not only have those gifts that I grew up with but, I read Tarot and Oracle as well.

Question: Let’s get to the guts of this interview, you mentioned to me that you had an experience with a poltergeist, can you please elaborate.

Answer: I was born in San Jose, I lived in this house. This house had a poltergeist. At the end of the hallway, it was very dark and cold. I would hear growling sounds or sounds of an animal in pain. This was coming out from the end of the hallway. Cabinets would open and close.

New Law Bans Genetic Discrimination

Author: Joe Markman   Source: Los Angeles Times

Title: NEW LAW BANS GENETIC DISCRIMINATION

The most sweeping federal anti-discrimination law in nearly 20 years takes effect today, prohibiting employers from hiring, firing or determining promotions based on genetic makeup.

Additionally, health insurers will not be allowed to consider a person's genetics -- such as predisposition for Parkinson's disease -- to set insurance rates or deny coverage.

Not since the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 has the federal government implemented such far-reaching workplace protections. Stuart J. Ishimaru, acting chairman of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, said in a statement that the law reaffirms the idea that people have a right to be judged solely on merit.

"No one should be denied a job or the right to be treated fairly in the workplace based on fears that he or she may develop some condition in the future," he said.

Fight Over Jewish Symbol Heads To Trial

Author: John Schwartz   Source: New York Times

Title: FIGHT OVER JEWISH SYMBOL HEADS TO TRIAL

The case of the missing mezuzah will go to trial.

Last week the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, in Chicago, ruled that a case may go forward involving a family’s fight to affix a small box containing Hebrew religious texts, known as a mezuzah, to the doorposts of their condominium units. The mezuzah has deep importance for many Jews as a sign of faith, but for the family of Lynne Bloch, it is also a symbol of battle.

The Blochs have lived in the Shoreline Towers condominium in Chicago for three decades. In May 2004, the condo association began a hallway renovation and asked residents to remove everything from their doors, including mezuzot (the plural of mezuzah). The Blochs took the mezuzot down from their three apartments, then replaced them when the renovations were complete. But the condo management removed them, and did so repeatedly so when the Blochs put them up again — even on the day of the funeral of the family patriarch, Marvin Bloch. The family sued the condo association in 2005.
