Amazing Graces: Table Blessings From Different Cultures

Author: Helen T. Gray Source: The Kansas City Star

Title: AMAZING GRACES: TABLE BLESSINGS FROM DIFFERENT CULTURES
When I was a child, my mother taught me a simple table grace: “God is great. God is good. Let us thank him for our food. Amen.”
I taught it to my son, who added another line: “Please don’t let this make us sick.” (I wondered if he was worried about my cooking.)
During more elaborate family gatherings like Thanksgiving, the simple prayer underwent a slight embellishment in honor of the occasion.
But my dad, a direct Army man with a sense of humor, loved to say, “Good bread. Good meat. Good Lord, let’s eat.” And off we went.

Christianity's Early Days Debated By Scientists

Author: Dan Vergano Source: USA Today

Title: CHRISTIANITY'S EARLY DAYS DEBATED BY SCIENTISTS
Da Vinci Code fans may thrill to dark conspiracies surrounding the secret history of early Christianity, but how many know about the real scholarly debate surrounding the young church? Even without a sleuthing Harvard "symboligist" involved, scholars have found plenty of intrigue in how early Christianity grew.
"How did the Mediterranean world become predominantly Christian?" asks historian Adam Schor of Long Island University, in Brookville, N.Y., in the current Journal of Religious History. "Generations of scholars have approached it, but each new theoretical angle seems to reopen basic questions."

Christian Leaders Unite On Political Issues

Author: Laurie Goodstein Source: New York Times

Title: CHRISTIAN LEADERS UNITE ON POLITICAL ISSUES
Citing the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s call to civil disobedience, 145 evangelical, Roman Catholic and Orthodox Christian leaders have signed a declaration saying they will not cooperate with laws that they say could be used to compel their institutions to participate in abortions, or to bless or in any way recognize same-sex couples.
“We pledge to each other, and to our fellow believers, that no power on earth, be it cultural or political, will intimidate us into silence or acquiescence,” it says.
The manifesto, to be released on Friday at the National Press Club in Washington, is an effort to rejuvenate the political alliance of conservative Catholics and evangelicals that dominated the religious debate during the administration of President George W. Bush. The signers include nine Roman Catholic archbishops and the primate of the Orthodox Church in America.
They want to signal to the Obama administration and to Congress that they are still a formidable force that will not compromise on abortion, stem-cell research or gay marriage.

Handcuffed Statue Has The Experts Talking

Author: Arkar Moe Source: The Irrawaddy (Burma)

Title: HANDCUFFED STATUE HAS THE EXPERTS TALKING
A handcuffed statue of a revered woman who exists only in Burma’s spirit world is at the center of debate and speculation among even the country’s intellectual elite.
“It is very interesting and mysterious story,” said Khin Maung Kyi, a writer on cultural affairs.
He and an increasing number of others interested in occult practices in Burma are following the story of a statue in Rangoon’s Bo Ta Htaung Pagoda which is handcuffed every night between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.
“It is a sign of superstition,” said Khin Maung Kyi. “So we need to watch and observe it.”

More: Moscow Priest Could Have Been Killed By Extremists, Pagans – Sources

Author: Interfax Source: Interfax

Title: MOSCOW PRIEST COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED BY EXTREMISTS, PAGANS – SOURCES
Moscow priest Daniil Sysoyev most likely has been killed for his missionary activity among the non-Orthodox Russian population, a source at law enforcement agencies told Interfax.
"He had recently received constant death threats from some extremist organizations. Daniil Sysoyev complained about it several times to the Federal Security Service," the source said.
Fr. Daniil might also have been killed by members from the so-called sect of Rodnovers (Slavic Neo-pagans), the source told Interfax.
Investigators are following all lines of inquiry but this theory remains the main one, he said.

Author: Tony Halpin Source: Times Online (UK)

Title: RUSSIAN PRIEST AND MUSLIM CRITIC, DANIIL SYSOYEV, ASSASSINATED IN CHURCH
A Russian Orthodox priest known for his outspoken criticism of Islam and attempts to convert Muslims to Christianity has been assassinated in his Moscow church.
A masked gunman shot Father Daniil Sysoyev in the head and chest after asking for him by name, police said. The choirmaster, Vladimir Strelbinsky, was seriously wounded in the attack at St Thomas Church in southern Moscow.
Father Daniil, 35, died of his wounds in hospital late last night. A Russian newspaper reported that he had recently told its journalists of 14 death threats by telephone and e-mail, which he had received as a result of his work among Muslim migrants from former Soviet republics.
